Arcane Ocean is a contemporary fantasy about the return of magic to the modern world. The central premise is that when given the ability to shape reality around us, it is easy to find yourself slipping into darkness. As the first in a larger series about magic returning, the story follows the lives of three friends as they struggle to learn magic's secrets and discover their own unique abilities. Morgan discovers she has the ability to communicate with animals, Kaleb discovers the ability to walk the realm of the dead, and Nick learns about psychic vampirism. Without anyone to guide them, they learn magic's mysteries on their own. Their own recklessness and selfishness are their greatest enemies. Arcane Ocean follows the transformation of ordinary young adults into sorcerers, shamans, and vampires. More perils await them in the second part of the trilogy, Arcane Fire, when the government discovers magic, and they witness the collapse of society in the conclusion Arcane Armageddon.

A fun read, very much brain candy. My issues with the book, while significant, are eased with how compelling the story is. I went into the book thinking it was a teen fantasy YA novel. The characters were perfect examples of (sometimes) insecure and dramatic gay men and their tragic straight girl best friend and I could hear and relate their voices to either myself or others I know. That being said, I sort of lost my footing when I realized these were not teenagers but adults in their early to mid twenties. This however works for the story. These adults that you would expect to have their act together are hopelessly victim to rampant emotions and internal drama. Coupled with the onset of magic entering their world, their reactions to situations are valid, even if you as the reader want to shout at the characters. They do grow tremendously from start to finish, just perhaps not in a typical teen drama expectation. The side and minor characters are wonderful, each with their own distinct voice and personality. With just the right amount of camp, all of the characters - and certainly including the animals - are in my opinion the best strength of this story.The story line takes a few dramatic turns and seems to vault from situation to situation, but this keeps the narrative swift.
The pagan jargon might be difficult to follow if you are not familiar with contemporary pagan rituals, but I think those familiar with wiccan/pagan spirituality could have been an intended audience. This is only a minor point as the story moves on strongly enough to cover any lost ground on technical language.
The ending raised my eyebrows a bit, which only compels me to want to read the next book. The first half of the book is mostly character drama, where as the second half is very magically driven activity with intense character conflict. The action scenes typically unfold in terms of casting spells and directing energy, but it is certainly still entertaining. I literally flinched when I read about a character ripping out someones root chakra (totally had to cross my legs for that scene).
Im not typically a fan of YA novels. I have a few reservations about calling this book one as I enjoyed it much more than I would reading Twilight or some other teen fantasy. I recommend this to anybody with an inclination to fantasy and a functioning understanding of gay culture/identity, but neither is necessary to enjoy the great story. Not your typical fantasy novel, but worth the couple of days I read it in on break at work and on my day off. I wouldn't recommend this book for anybody under the age of 15, or conservative soccer moms.

I'm a sucker for fantasy stories and I love magic, so I really enjoyed this book. The different abilities the characters manifest are all very interesting, and the story definitely left me wanting to read more to see why and how magic came back to the world. As others have mentioned, I absolutely love Mercedes! I felt all of the characters were well written, and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing whats in store for them in the coming books.
This is a contemporary/YA fantasy story. The emphasis on it being YA, and the fantasy coming from the use of magic. Set in today's world, Arcane Ocean tells the story of three friends and their discovery, and the resulting events, of high magic. This is not an fantasy epic, but I was entertained throughout and read it very quickly. This contains a fair bit of humor and compelling relationships. I will be looking for the sequels when they are written. Rated 3 stars only because the scope of the story is not fully fleshed out. I can see my rating of the series to possibly increase to 3.5-4 after sequels.
Arcane Ocean by Nathan Dudley is a magickally wonderful read. Nathan does an excellent job of what a sailor would call “Spinning a good yarn, Mate”. The story never drags. It flows and pulls you further into the imaginary world more with each page you read. It’s a hard book to put down. The first book of a trilogy, Arcane Ocean ends almost too soon and will leave you thirsting for the second book, Arcane Fire, which according to Nathan, will be out soon.
So I gave the book a shot after hearing about it from the author himself, and I read a good chunk of it in one go. To say the least, he made you hate most of the characters. It isn't the typical dystopian novel that each main protagonist follows. He made you hate each of their flaws, but enjoy what they were tying to do.Which a few of those characters were a great comedy relief in the storm that was brewing. I shows what a most normal people would do when granted some sort of power. Anger would lead to accidental deaths, accidental deaths would lead to distress and not knowing what to do. So what else would people do with magic do? Use magic to fix their problems. Instead of the typical good guy bad guy who has magic, which tends to be predictable, most of the characters are in the gray. I ended up hating half of the characters except Morgan, Mercedes, Walter, and Kaleb, depending on his mood. But like all authors do, they destroy what you love. Gonna read the second book and hope answers are given.
This book is a solid read. Yes, the first edition was published excitedly with many issues, but fear not, potential readers! The revised edition is well done.
The characters range from intentionally grating to absolutely brilliant. Have we seen talking, sarcastic cats before? Sure. Will you laugh with every snarky remark from Mercedes? Definitely. She's a great character with an addictive voice.
The author's quips are his strength. Yes, the characters are not archetypal, and that's another strength. Those of you used to reading through tropes may be frustrated. "Which character is supposed to be ME? Where is the wise old guardian?" The answers are nobody and nowhere.
I like that he created new ideas and character styles. The pacing of the book never eases; sure, there is one restaurant dinner, but there is little to no filler in this book. It's punch after punch.
Since the version I read was the revised edition, I have no comments about the unedited edition (I have seen an excerpt, and I assure you that it is much improved in grammar AND storytelling). But this is a book worth your time, and as a freshman author, Mr. Dudley is certain to improve through the rest of this series.
